A successful website is part of a long-term strategy; not a quick fix. It must become integrated in the processes of your business or organisation. A website can help you better represent your business to customers, improve your reach and save on expenses; so it is not enough to just have a website, you must decide to use it or lose it.
Here are some tips to get more from your existing website:
Get your own email addresses based on your website address. It’s more professional. Make sure your domain name reflects your business name as closely as possible. Purchase multiple domains and domain name types, for example yourdomain.com, yourdomain.net.au. All these domain names can be pointed to one website.
Think like your customer. What do they want to know about your business? First impressions are important, but creating useful content and providing clear and easy navigation will be more important for your site’s success than bells and whistles.
Keep it current
It is important to maintain your sites content or loose visitor interest. Not sure what information to add? Here are some ideas:
- Product catalogues and brochures
- Annual reports
- Application forms
- Press releases
- Links to industry news
And most importantly – make sure your contact information is up-to-date! If you are displaying trading hours on your website, make sure they are current. Ditto for phone numbers, email addresses and store locations.
The number of site visitors is proportional to the number of people that have heard about it. Promote your website address anywhere you can including all advertising (radio and print), on your email signature, stationary etc. Get your business listed in free online directories such as True Local, HotFrog and Start Local.
There are many methods available to encourage interaction between you and your website visitors, and, depending on your industry, it can be useful to encourage interaction between your customers. You should be using at least one of the methods listed below:
A newsletter will enable you to keep in contact with your customers and prospects, thereby building a relationship with them. You can provide news of new products, special offers, new features on your website, etc.
Facebook, Twitter and Pin Interest are the three most popular forms of social media today. You can use them in a similar way you would a newsletter, to inform and build relationships. Include links to your social media pages on your website and be sure to keep your social media pages current with interesting and relevant content.
By placing a survey on your website you can get quick feedback from your visitors. Use it as a form of market research. As an incentive, run the survey in conjunction with a competition, ie fill out the survey to go into the draw and win a prize.
Adding a blog to your website is an easy and inexpensive way of conversing with your customers online. Your blog should be on a topic of interest to your customer, for example if you sell fishing equipment your customers would be interested in a blog offering hints and tips, and perhaps the odd “tall” fishing tale every now and then. Having a blog will also improve your rankings in the search engines, as it is all indexable content.
