Below is a list of some common signs it is time to consider a redesign.
Your website is not mobile responsive
This is a biggy. A responsive website changes its appearance and layout based on the size of the screen the website is displayed on. This can include larger text to accommodate smaller screens, and mobile friendly navigation for easier browsing on smaller screens such as smartphones and tablets. If your website is not mobile responsive you will be penalised by Google in your search rankings (read more about that here). By incorporating responsive design into your new website, you’ll be assured of reaching a larger audience than you would with a website that’s not mobile-friendly.
The purpose/goal of your site has changed.
It is not unusual for a business to grow and change direction over a period of time, and so to should your site change and evolve to match. For example, at the time of building your website, your goal may have been to sell products. Now, your goal may be to increase repeat business.
To incorporate new branding.
Don’t forget to include your website in any re-branding exercise. Re-branding may not only include a change in logo and colours, but can also include updating the content of the website to bring it inline with your offline branding.
Your website looks old and outdated.
If your website is more than three or four years old chances are it is looking a bit tired. This can send the wrong message to prospective clients when visiting your site.
Did you know that hackers are trying to hack your site at least 3 times every day? This is a true and very scary fact. For this reason it is important to keep your website and its CMS up to date. If your site is running on an old version of a CMS it is vulnerable.
Incorporate new functionality.
You may decide to add social media sharing, blogs, forums, or e-commerce. Adding new functionality is a good reason to have a site redesign.
If you are not getting the results you want from your website, you may consider a re-design to improve usability. This can include a re-organisation of the navigation structure, removing “clutter” such as unnecessary animations and pop-ups and removing out-dated technology like Flash.
