What are QR (Quick Response) bar codes?
You would have almost certainly seen these appearing in magazine advertisements, business cards and even T-Shirts. The QR (short for Quick Response) barcodes are fast gaining popularity in Australia as a method of marketing to smart phone and tablet users. This technology was developed in Japan in 1994 and was originally used for tracking parts in vehicle manufacturers, but has now been adopted for far broader uses.
They look like this:
This is an actual QR code which, when scanned into your smartphone or tablet, will take you to the TotaleSolutions website (go ahead, try scanning it…)
So what do they do?
QR codes are like a barcode. Smartphones and tablets can now read the barcodes and perform certain functions, like allowing someone to add contact information or visit a website on their phone. The code can be scanned from any smart phone, tablet or desktop (with a webcam), providing an appropriate “app” is installed on the device. These apps can be downloaded for free and there are a number to choose from, depending on your operating system (ie Android or Apple).
How can they help me in my Business?
QR codes can be used in a number of ways, and is not limited to the type or size of your business. You might auto generate one next to every product on your web site containing all the product details, the number to call and the URL link to the page so they can show their friends on their cell phone. You could add one to your business card containing your contact details so it’s easy for someone to add you to their contacts on their cell phone.
Add them to any print advertising, brochures, posters, invites containing:
- Product details
- Contact details
- Offer details
- Event details
- Competition details
- A coupon
- Links to your website and/or Social Media pages
